Wenige Minuten von Barcelonas Kathedrale entfernt, liegt das Caelum an der Ecke Carrer de la Palla und Carrer dels Banys Nous (genauer gesagt IST es die Ecke :-). Das Kaffee hat eine nette Retroatmosphaere, eine Art chabby chick Puppenhaus, die Frau Espressorato sicher noch besser gefallen wuerde als mir.

Das Personal war sehr freundlich und hat meinen Espresso sofort zubereitet. Der Espresso selbst war leider in allen Kategorien eher durchschnittlich. Crema, Fuelle und Komplexitaet waren zwar in Ordnung aber sind nichts, fuer das ich ans andere Ende der Stadt fahren wuerde. Insgesamt gebe ich dem Caelum daher gute 3 Sterne.

Caelum

A short walk from the cathedral of Barcelona, you will find the Caelum at the corner of Carrer de la Palla and Carrer dels Banys Nous (in fact, it IS the corner :-). The cafe has a nice retro touch to it, a sort of shabby chick doll house that would probably appeal more to Mrs. Espresso than it does to me.

The staff was very friendly and prepared my espresso almost instantly. The espresso, however, was average in all aspects. Crema, richness and complexity of taste were acceptable but nothing to travel across town for. Overall this leads to a solid 3 star rating.

Die meisten Besucher kommen ins Caffe Fausto um dort den frisch geroesteten Kaffee der gleichnamigen Roesterei zu kaufen. In der Kraemerschen Kunstmühle in Giesing gelegen, ist es mit oeffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln eher schlecht zu erreichen und ich sehe das Kaffee eher als kurze Rastmoeglichkeit nach dem Bohnenkauf.

Selbstverstaendlich weiss man bei Fausto auch wie man einen guten Espresso zubereitet. Da das Kaffee aber eher funktional eingerichtet ist und die Aussicht durch den Parkplatz davor dominiert wird, gebe ich insgesamt 4 Sterne. Der frisch geroestete Kaffee ist aber sicher der beste den man in Muenchen bekommen kann.

Caffe Fausto

Most people will visit Fausto primarily to buy their freshly roasted beans. Situated at the Kraemerschen Kunstmühle in Giesing the cafe to me, too, is mostly a place to rest before heading back home.

Of course, the good people at Fausto know how to prepare a very good espresso - anything else would have come as a surprise to me. Since the cafe is sparsely decorated and the view is mostly dominated by the parking lot out front, I rate the cafe an overall 4 stars. The freshly roasted beans are probably the best you can get in Munich tough.

Manche sagen, es ist unmoeglich guten Espresso in Thailand zu finden. Ich sage, ja es ist schwer. Oft bekommt man in Thailand Instantkaffee und falls nicht, sind die Bohnen meistens zu dunkel geroestet. Aber dann habe ich zufaellig einen Glueckstreffer gelandet: Smooth Note, neben der Skytrain-Haltestelle Surasak. Das Kaffee ist relativ neu und wird von freundlichen jungen Leuten betrieben, die ihr Handwerk zu verstehen scheinen.

Mir wurde ein ganz ordentlicher Espresso serviert, der eine gute Crema hatte. Der Espresso hatte einen vollen, wenn auch etwas dunklen Geschmack. Im Vergleich zum Durchschnittskaffee in Thailand war er aber bei weitem der beste. Daher gebe ich dem Smooth Note lokale fuenf Sterne und empfehle es Espressotrinkern als Zufluchtsort in Sathorn, Bangkok.

Smooth Note Coffee, Bangkok

They say you cannot find good espresso in Thailand. I say: yes, it is hard to find. Thai coffee is often instant coffee and if it isn't it usually is roasted too dark. But then I made a lucky find: Smooth Note just outside Surasak station. This fairly new cafe is operated by friendly young people that seem to know their trade.

I was served a very decent espresso with a good dark crema. It had a full, slightly too dark taste. But compared to the average coffee in Thailand, this one was by far the best. So considering this, I rate the Smooth Note a local five stars and recommend it as the espresso lover's life saver in Sathorn, Bangkok.

Das Cafe Altschwabing liegt im Universitaetsvirtel und versteht sich als Kaffeehaus mit Tradition. Angeblich haben sich hier frueher namhafte Kuenstler getroffen. Die Einrichtung ist typisch Kaffeehaus: schwarzbraune Holzmoebel und Kronleuchter. Das Personal bedient schnell und professionell. Ich habe den Eindruck, die meisten Besucher kommen hier eher zum Essen und Trinken her.

Der Espresso, der mir serviert wurde, war eine mittlere Katastrophe. Von Geschmack und Aussehen her tippe ich auf einen Vollautomaten mit Dallmayr Bohnen. Der Espresso hat eventuell auch zu lange gestanden bevor er serviert wurde, eine Crema war kaum vorhanden. Ich kann das Cafe Altschwabing fuer Espressotrinker daher nicht empfehlen. Ich werde hier nur noch Bier trinken.

Cafe Altschwabing

The Cafe Altschwabing can be found in the university district, it considers itself a coffee house with a long tradition. Allegedly, well-known artists used to meet here. The interior is decorated in the typical coffee house style: black-brown wooden furniture and chandeliers. The staff is serving fast and professionally. My impression is that most people rather come here for food and drinks than for coffee.

The espresso that I was served was a mild disaster. Judging from looks and taste I assume this was brewed in an automatic machine from Dallmayr beans. The espresso may also have stood on the counter for too long, there hardly was any crema. Therefore I cannot recommend the Cafe Altschwabing to espresso lovers. The only thing I will drink here in the future is beer.

Das Cafe liegt im noerdlichen Teil des Glockenbachviertels. Es ist mit einem sympathischen Sammelsurium von Holzmoebeln eingerichtet, dass mich an die Oeko-Wohnkuechen meiner Kindheit erinnert. Man kann auch vor dem Cafe auf kleinen Holzstuehlchen sitzen. Das Personal ist freundlich und geht auf besondere Wuensche ein.

Mein Espresso wurde perfekt zubereitet und kam in einer dickwandigen ACF-Tasse. Die Crema war honig-golden, der Geschmack ausgewogen und erdig. Ich persoenlich bevorzuge einen etwas volleren Geschmack, trotzdem ist der Espresso in der Aromabar ueberdurchschnittlich gut.

Aroma Kaffeebar

The cafe is located in the northern part of the Glockenbachviertel. It is furnished with a mishmash of wooden tables and chairs that reminds me of the family kitchens of my childhood. If you're lucky, you can also find a spot outside, in front of the cafe. The staff is friendly and ready to help with particular requests.

My espresso was perfectly prepared and came in a thick ACF cup. The crema was a honey gold, the taste was well balanced and earthy. While personally I would prefer a slightly fuller taste, the espresso at Aromabar is still well above average.

Das kleine Kaffee liegt in der Innenstadt, etwa fuenf Minuten vom Marienplatz entfernt. Es ist mit Rennradfotos und anderen Devotionalien dekoriert und auf verschiedene Weise sehr italienisch: die Deko, die Moebel, die Menschen - eigentlich alles. Ein Muenchner Boxenstopp am Mittelmeer :-) Das Team war aussergewoehnlich freundlich!

In dieser Bar wird Illy Typ N (rot) ausgeschenkt, eine typisch nord-italienische Bohne aber eben leider nichts besonders. Mein Espresso wurde professionell zubereitet und kam mit einer schoenen Crema.

Der Espresso ist leider ein Standardkaffee, fuer den ich keinen weiteren Weg auf mich nehmen wuerde. Insgesamt gefaellt mir das Kaffee aber wegen der tollen Atmosphaere - an einem sonnigen Tag fuehlt man sich wie in einer Espressobar in Italien.

Bar Centrale

The small bar is located in the city center, about five minutes from Marienplatz. It is decorated with parts of road bikes and photos of bike races. This place is Italian in many ways, from the decor to the assortment of furniture, the people, and just about everything else - a Mediterranean pit stop in the heart of Munich :-) The staff was exceptionally friendly!

The beans served in this bar are Illy Type N (red). This is a typical roast from northern Italy but nothing fancy. My espresso was professionally brewed and came with a nice crema.

Espressowise, standard Illy beans will not make me walk the extra mile. But overall, I like the place for its atmosphere. On a summer day, it really feels like being in an Italian espresso bar.

Espresso stazione liegt relativ zentral und ist nicht weit vom Kongresszentrum entfernt. Der kleine Laden macht einen gemuetlichen, studentischen Eindruck. Das Personal ist gut gelaunt, der Eigentuemer steht selbst mit an der Maschine.

Das beste: bei espresso stazione wird selbst geroestet! Das schmeckt und sieht man dem Espresso an. Der Espresso hat einen vollen Geschmack mit dezenter Saeure und ueberzeugt durch eine komplexe Mischung von Gemacksnuancen. Abgerundet wird das Bild durch eine schoene, dunkle Crema, eher grau-braun. Der Kaffee, Marke "Tostino", kann im Laden gekauft werden.

Sowohl Ambiente als auch Espresso ueberzeugen auf ganzer Linie, eine klare Empfehlung.

Espresso stazione can be found in the city center, not too far from the trade fair. The small bar is cozy, there are newspapers to pass the time and you can take your espresso outside to sit in front of the bar. The staff is cheerful and you will see the owner preparing espressos just like the rest of them.

Best of all: the guys at espresso stazione roast their own coffee! You will see and taste that in the espresso. I found the espresso to have a complex and full taste with subtle sour notes. This is rounded by a nice, dark crema, of a gray-brown color. You can buy the "Tostino" coffee in the bar.

Both the bar itself and the quality of the espresso are outstanding. Highly recommended.

Sucht man nach dem "besten Espresso in Muenchen" faellt unweigerlich der Name Kaffee Espresso & Barista. Der Inhaber hat sich ganz dem Kaffee beschrieben und gibt auch Seminare zum Thema. Das Cafe wirkt wie eine Mischung aus Kaffeegeschaeft und Espressomaschinenmuseum. Leider war das Cafe so ueberfuellt, dass es keine Sitzplaetze mehr gab und wir mit einem Stehplatz im Gang vorlieb nehmen mussten.

Der Espresso wurde professionell zubereitet, hier kennt man sich aus! Eine schoene dicke Crema von mittelbrauner Farbe fand sich in einer ebenso schoenen Tasse. Der Geschmack des Espressos war solide und ausgewogen, wenn auch nicht herausragend.

Fuer das Ambiente vergebe ich 4 Sterne weil das Durcheinander aus Kaffee und Maschinenmuseum durchaus gemuetlich sein koennte. Leider gibt es aber besonders am Wochenende wenig Platz fuer Gaeste. Der Espresso bekommt von mir ebenfalls 4 Sterne, insgesamt ist das Kaffee Espresso & Barista also fuer Espressotrinker empfehlenswert. Die Moeglichkeit, dort verschiedenste Kaffeesorten kaufen zu koennen, ist fuer mich definitiv ein Plus.

Searching for the "best espresso in Munich" will inevitably lead you to Kaffee Espresso & Barista. The owner seams to be dedicated to the subject of coffee and they even give courses about espresso brewing. The cafe gives you the impression of a sort of blend between a coffee store and a museum of espresso machines. Unfortunately the cafe was so crowded that we had to make do with a place in the aisle.

The espresso was professionally prepared, people know their stuff around here. A nice thick crema of a medium brown color was served in an equally nice cup. The taste of the espresso was solid and well balanced, but nothing extraordinary.

I rate the atmosphere 4 stars, since the jumble of coffee and espresso machine museum could really be interesting. Unfortunately there isn't too much room for guests, especially on weekends. The espresso is a solid 4 stars and overall I recommend the Espresso & Barista to espresso lovers. I consider the possibility to buy a large variety of coffees there a definitive plus.

Das Karameel liegt etwas abseits des Rotkreuzplatzes an der Nymphenburger Strasse. Von aussen kann man nur erahnen, wie geschickt das Innere eingerichtet ist. Auf mehreren Ebenen sind verschiedenste Sitzmoebel zu kleinen Gruppen angeordnet. Jeder Tisch ist anders und bietet einen anderen Blick auf das Cafe. Gemuetlich!

Gegenueber diesem tollen Ambiente fiel der Espresso leider stark ab. Mein doppio hatte nur eine sehr duenne Crema. Der verwendete bio-Espresso konnte geschmacklich leider nicht ueberzeugen, eher duenn, dunkel und eine Spur erdig. Ich bin sicher, das geht besser.

Fuer das Ambiente gibt es von mir die volle Punktzahl, ein schoenes Kaffeehaus! Fuer den Espresso kann ich leider nur zwei Sterne geben - ich werde es aber nochmal zu einer anderen Zeit versuchen, vielleicht war es ja nur ein Ausrutscher.

Kafehaus Karameel

The Karameel is located not too far from Rotkreuzplatz on Nymphenburger Strasse. From the outside you can only imagine how clever the interior is laid out. On several levels you will find a diverse assortment of furniture that is arranged into small groups. Every table is different and offers a unique view. Cozy!

Compared to this great atmosphere, the espresso unfortunately could not keep up. My doppio came with a very slim crema. The taste of the organic espresso did not convince me either: rather thin, dark, and a bit earthy. I am sure they could do better.

I rate the atmosphere a perfect five stars, it is a beautiful coffee house! The espresso that I had was two stars - I will try again though since I really liked the place and I would be happy to uprate the espresso to four stars if it was prepared correctly.

Copacabana Coffee & Juice

Das Copacabana hat im Netz durchweg gute Kritiken bekommen, unter anderem auch fuer ihren Espresso. Das hat mich neugierig gemacht. Das kleine Cafe liegt etwas versteckt in einer Seitenstrasse der Sendlingerstrasse (nicht weit vom Sendlinger Tor).

Die Einrichtung erinnert an Urwald - eine gute Idee! Leider gibt es nicht allzu viele Sitzplaetze, ich finde der Raum koennte besser aufgeteilt werden. Im Radio lief Tanz-Pop-Musik, das passte gar nicht zum Junglethema.

Der Espresso war tatsaechlich gut! Es dauerte zwar eine ganze Weile, dafuer kam er aber mit einer schoenen, dicken, braunen Crema. Perfekt zubereitet. Geschmacklich haette ich mir etwas mehr Komplexitaet gewuenscht, fruchtige oder saure Anteile konnte ich nicht herausschmecken.

Fuer das Ambiente gebe ich drei Sterne, fuer den Espresso gebe ich vier mit Hoffnung auf fuenf. Insgesamt ergeben sich damit vier Sterne. Ich werde auf jeden Fall wieder kommen, wenn ich in der Gegend bin.

Copacabana Coffee & Juice

The Copacabana received quite positive reviews on the net, among other things for their espresso. This made me curious. The small cafe can be found in a side street of Sendlingerstrasse (near Sendlinger Tor).

The interior makes you think of a jungle - cool idea! Unfortunately there aren't too many seats, in my opinion the space could be used better. The radio played dance-pop-music, not really fitting the jungle theme.

The espresso really was good! It took quite a while but in exchange I got a beautiful thick brown crema. Perfectly brewed. Tastewise, I expected a little more complexity, I could not taste any fruity or sour notes.

I rate the atmosphere three stars and four for the espresso (hoping for five soon). This results in an overall rating of four stars. I will definitely visit again when I'm in the area.
